Expanded clay is a substrate with different aesthetic and practical functions. Manufactured from clay treated at high temperatures so that it expands and leaves a highly porous structure that gives it the properties we want. It is an inorganic product of low weight and high volume.
Expanded clay is a spherical material and we can use it with various uses in gardening.
Aesthetic function:
We can place the clay as a coating of a surface with plants. In addition to a more arranged space, we will prevent unwanted weeds from getting out, will prevent the soil from drying out too much and also gives a temperature protection by creating an insulating layer of air comprised in the molecular structure of expanded clay balls.
Practical Function:
It can be mixed with the substrate. Because of its porous structure, it is able to accumulate oxygen, nutrients and water. It works as an oxygenation regulator and as a store of water and nutrients.
If we put a layer in the base of pots and planters before adding the substrate, we will get a good drainage, preventing water from accumulating at the bottom of these and therefore the roots will not rot.
Recommended proportions:
To place on the surface we recommend a layer between 3 and 5 cm thick.
As drainage it is advisable between 2 and 3 cm.
As part of the substrate, it will depend on the species and simply spread the expanded clay balls homogeneously.
It can only be used as a support for hydroponic crops.
Recommendation:
On terraces and balconies it is highly recommended to use this material as a drain. In many cases excess weight can be a problem. The expanded clay is a very light and bulky substrate with which we will reduce the total weight of the containers, planters and pots in the homes.
